|LaGrange's Clutch Hit Lifts UNCW To Win|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Ryan LaGrange’s run scoring single with two outs in the eighth inning lifted UNCW to a 3-2 win over the College of Charleston on Saturday at Brooks Field and clinched the Colonial Athletic Association series for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks improved to 23-22 overall with the win and moved to 8-7 in the league with their fourth straight conference home victory. The Cougars, who entered the day in second place, dropped to 31-15 and 10-4. The win gave UNCW sole possession of third place, a half-game ahead of idle Delaware.
Freshman Cory Gant (2-1) earned the win, allowing just one base runner over his two innings of relief. Christian MacDonald picked up his second save of the season for the Seahawks.
Eric Bauer, the reigning CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week, was tagged with his first loss of the season to dip to 4-1. Bauer allowed a run on four hits in two innings of relief.
Neither starter figured in the decision despite tremendous outings. CofC freshman Bailey Ober allowed two runs in the first, but settled in and went six strong innings and finished with six strikeouts. Junior Jordan Ramsey went six innings, allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five.
LaGrange finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, all coming with two out. Luke Dunlap added two hits and scored twice for UNCW.
Carl Wise was the only CofC player with a multi-hit game, finishing with two singles.
Up next: The two rivals conclude their regular season series with a 2 p.m. start on Sunday.
How it happened: It all started with two outs in the eighth when Dunlap singled and moved around to third on a single up the middle by Joe Bertone. With runners at the corners, LaGrange delivered the game-winning hit with a single to left off Bauer, who retired five consecutive batters prior to Dunlap’s at bat.
Inside the box score: In another pitching dominated game, CofC (3-for-9) and UNCW (1-for-8) combined to get its leadoff batter on safely just four times … UNCW pitches held CofC hitless with two outs (0-6) while UNCW went 5-for-12 … Neither team had a runner on third with less than two out.
Notes: Saturday’s game was played in a brisk 2:11 … In his last two starts, Ramsey has allowed three runs over 10 innings combined against Delaware and CofC … LaGrange moved into second on the team with 12 2-out RBI’s … The Seahawks now lead the all-time series, 7-5 … Saturday was the sixth one-run game in the series … Ryan Foster (1-2) will start Sunday’s game for UNCW.
