HARRISONBURG, Virginia – Junior Cam Walton defended his Long Jump title and while freshman Daniel Cafferey and senior Dn Cherry finished second in the Javelin and Hammer Throws, respectively, to lead UNCW on the opening day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at University Park in Harrisonburg, Va.

After just six scored events, the UNCW men are in third and the women are fourth. William & Mary, who swept last year’s championships, leads both fields.

Walton used a mark of 23-10.25 feet to win the event. The Seahawks took the top five spots in the event with Nate Chronister and Trey Jones placing second and third, respectively. Walton, Chronister and Jones earned All-CAA honors for their efforts.

Cherry, who finished third in the event in 2013, also garnered All-CAA honors with her second-place finish on a mark of 166-0 feet.

In the men’s Pole Vault, Andy Jung vaulted 14-9 to finish third and earn All-CAA honors.

Advancing to Saturday’s finals with first-place finishes in preliminary events were Meena Reid (100m, 200m) and Brandon McLean (200m).

The meet resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Decathlon.
