WILMINGTON, North CarolinaDrew Farber homered and knocked in four runs as UNCW raced to an early 8-0 lead before holding off long-time rival Elon late for a 10-7 win on Tuesday at Brooks Field.

With the win, UNCW improved to 20-19 and moved above .500 for the first time since beating Liberty on Feb. 23 to go to 4-3. The Phoenix dropped to 25-16 with the road loss and stand at 3-8 away from Latham Park.

Sophomore reliever Jared Gesell (1-0) picked up the win, the first of his career, allowing an unearned run on one hit in 2.2 innings out of the bullpen. Senior Christian MacDonald recorded the four-out save, retiring all four batters he faced. It was his first career save.

Elon starter Mike Krill (1-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings.

Joe Bertone scored three runs while Farber scored twice and drew two walks. His three-run homer in the second inning was the first of his season and second of his career against the Phoenix.

Up next: The Seahawks visit NC State for a 6 p.m. start on Wednesday before traveling to Delaware for a key Colonial Athletic Association series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.

How it happened: UNCW got out to an 8-0 lead after three innings. Farber’s three-run shot in the second capped a four-run frame and the Seahawks took advantage of four walks, a hit batter and three wild pitches to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

Inside the box score: UNCW plated three runs on three wild pitches in the second inning and drew seven walks … The Seahawks were 4-for-8 in RBI opportunities … UNCW was 0-for-7 with two out and 1-for-8 when leading off innings … Seahawk pitchers held Elon to 2-for-8 hitting in RBI chances.
