|Cougars Take Opener From Seahawks, 8-2|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team fell to College of Charleston, 8-2, in the opener of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association softball series Saturday at Boseman Field.
The Cougars improved to 32-14 overall and 6-4 in league play with the win as they picked up their ninth victory in their last 10 games. The Seahawks, meanwhile, moved to 17-25 and 3-6.
Game two of Saturday’s doubleheader was suspended in the middle of the second inning with CofC leading UNCW, 4-0. The two teams will resume the game at the point of postponement Sunday at 1 p.m. before playing the final game of the series immediately afterwards.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The two teams traded runs in the first inning as CofC used an error and a run-scoring single from Carly Hansis to build a 2-0 cushion before a double by senior Casey Shue and an error in the bottom half of the frame allowed the Seahawks to tie the game at 2-2.
CofC took the lead in the top of the third on a two-out single by Hansis before a leadoff home run from senior Kelsey Hodgson pushed the Cougars advantage to 4-0.
The score would remain 4-2 in favor of CofC until the top of the seventh, when the Cougars plated four runs on five hits, highlighted by run-scoring hits Hansis, Hodgson and sophomore Rebecca Mueller to build an 8-2 cushion and close out the scoring.
AT THE PLATE: Hansis and Hodgson were both 3-for-4 to pace a Cougars lineup that finished with 12 hits in the contest. Hansis finished with three RBI and Hodgson plated two runs. Vaughn and Corthell tallied two hits each.
Freshman Lauren Moore was 2-for-3 for UNCW while Shue was 1-for-3 with a RBI. Four players accounted for the Seahawks other four hits in the contest.
IN THE CIRCLE: Junior Hope Klicker picked up the win for the Cougars in game one as she improved to 16-10 on the season. In a complete-game effort, Klicker allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk. She stuck out four.
Junior Casey Rowland took the loss for UNCW to move to 9-10 on the season. In 6.1 innings of work, Rowland surrendered eight runs on 11 hits and one walk. She struck out six.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE: The two teams combined to leave 10 runners on base (UNCW 5; CofC 5) … The two teams combined to place their leadoff runner on base in five of 14 attempts … CofC’s top four hitters were a combined 8-of-15 with six runs scored … The Cougars were a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.
