|Clutch Hitting, Pitching Sinks UNCW|
WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Nick Thompson had three hits, including his ninth homer of the season, scored four runs and knocked in three as William & Mary beat UNCW, 10-2, to win the Colonial Athletic Association series on Sunday at Plumeri Park.
The Tribe upped its record to 20-10 overall and 4-1 in the league. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dipped to 14-16 and 2-3.
Reliever Joseph Gaouette (3-1) was masterful out of the bullpen, striking out nine, walking one and allowing one hit over 5.1 innings. Starter Mitchell Aker lasted just 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a pair of walks.
For UNCW, starter Nick Monroe (1-2) took the loss, failing to make it out of the third inning. Monroe allowed three runs on three hits and two walks.
Charlie Gould drove in five runs on the strength of a double, single and walk for W&M. Kevin Nutter and Michael Katz each added two hits.
Casey Golden was the only Seahawk with a multiple-hit game.
Up next: The Seahawks host Campbell on Tuesday and visit North Carolina Central on Wednesday. Both games are set for 6 p.m. starts.
How it happened: UNCW held a 2-0 lead and had several opportunities to extend that lead early, but failed to do so. The Tribe was able to take advantage of those missed opportunities and take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Monroe retired the first hitter of the inning, but was tagged for three straight hits and a walk before being removed. Gould connected on a two-out single to left off reliever Christian MacDonald, scoring two for a 3-2 lead.
Inside the box score: UNCW was 1-for-7 in RBI opportunities and 1-for-8 with runners on base … UNCW’s 14 strikeouts were a season high … Eight of W&M’s 10 runs came across the plate with two outs … William & Mary did not land its leadoff hitter on base all game … UNCW did not have a hit after the third inning and not a base runner after the fourth … Tribe pitchers retired the last 17 hitters straight.
Notes: The Seahawks hit .197 and struck out 25 times in the final two games of the series … With the victory Friday night, Mark Scalf became the first coach in the CAA to win 300 career conference games … Casey Golden homered to lead off the game and later added a double, the last Seahawk to lead off a game with a homer was Michael Bass at Charleston Southern on Feb. 20, 2013 … The series loss for UNCW to William & Mary was the first since 2004 … Coming into Saturday, UNCW had won 11 of its last 12 against the Tribe.
