MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina – UNCW senior Payne McLeod totaled six birdies in the opening round and is tied for second at the General Hackler Championship at TPC of Myrtle Beach on Monday.

McLeod (70-74=144) is in position to win his first tournament since winning the Colonial Athletic Association title last spring. His best finish of the 2013-14 season is a second-place outing at the Rees Jones Invitational in September. McLeod carded an opening round two-under-70 and held a share of the lead before dropping one spot into second after 36 holes.

The Seahawks are in 10th-place, ahead of UNC Chapel Hill and Northern Illinois.

Defending co-champion and 23rd-ranked Kent State holds a one-stroke lead over East Carolina and Middle Tennessee State.

East Tennessee’s Rhys Pugh, meanwhile, holds a one-stroke lead over a trio of golfers, including McLeod, in second.
