|Baseball Preview: VCU **UPDATED**|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Seahawks return to Brooks Field following a brief four-game road swing that included the program’s first-ever trip to California. Friday's opener has been postponed. UNCW and VCU will now open the series with a 3 p.m. start on Saturday. The two rivals will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
UNCW enters the series with a 5-6 mark after going 1-2 in California with a win over Baylor and losses to San Diego and Pepperdine.
Heading the offense is junior first baseman Corey Dick, who totes a six-game hitting streak into the weekend series while hitting .400 with a team-high 11 runs batted in. Also above .300 are freshmen Casey Golden (.355) and Robbie Thorburn (.343). Sophomore middle infielder Terence Connelly continues to recover from a slow start and has raised his average to .345.
VCU, meanwhile, has stormed out of the gates with a 10-1 mark behind a strong pitching staff and a lineup averaging nearly eight runs a game.
James Bunn has ignited the Rams offense, hitting a team-high .386 with 12 runs scored, also a team-leading total. Although VCU has just one homer on the season (Chris Ayers) it does have 17 doubles and three triples. VCU owns an incredible .389 on base average with 43 walks and 18 hit batters. Opponents have committed 24 errors against the Rams.
UNCW owns a 46-32 advantage in the all-time series and competed along with VCU in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks swept VCU last season early on and snapping a nine-game winning streak the Rams had.
