Tarzana, California – The UNCW women’s golf team combined for a team total 329 to claim 15th place in the final round of the Bruin Wave Invitational Tuesday at the El Caballero Country Club.

The Seahawks finished the 54-hole event on the par-72, 6,173-yard layout with a 317-317-329=963 scorecard, nine strokes ahead of New Mexico State (322-320-330=972) and BYU (317-323-332=972).

“It was an excellent experience for us to come out west to face the best teams like Southern California and UCLA plus compete on a championship course such as El Caballero, said UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho. “In the end, we struggled for three rounds trying to stay out of the 4-5 inches of rough off the tee and around the greens.  It was very difficult to make par when we had to layup after missing the fairways. We just can't prepare for that in the southeast and it started to put a lot of pressure on our drives and our short game.”

Top-ranked Southern California more than doubled its 36-hole lead on its way to a 13-stroke victory with a three-round total of one-under-par 863 (296-277-290). Co-host No. 17 Pepperdine (291-290-295=876) took second while No. 2 UCLA (292-286-308=886) finished third and No. 11 Arizona (299-295-305=899) claimed fourth.

Senior Lori Beth Adams paced the Seahawks in their spring debut, finishing tied for 21st with a 73-72-82=227 tournament scorecard. Sophomore Meghan Theiss (84-79-76=239) claimed a share of 55th and fellow sophomore Annette Lyche (79-84-81=244) earned a share of 68th while junior Mallory Warrick (85-87-90=262/T-84th) and senior Megan Burnham (81-82-WD=163/90th) rounded out UNCW’s lineup.

“Lori Beth is our most accurate ball striker and because of that, she was able to manage the course,” said Ho. “She had a great performance on the 36-hole day to put herself in contention once again and while she struggled in the final round, it was still a tremendous effort against some of the best players in the country.

“Megan Theiss bounced back well the last day to lead our team today. I was hoping to start the spring on a stronger note.  We were definitely rusty after not competing since October but we can take a lot from playing at a west coast venue to help us in the future. Megan Burnham had to withdraw due to an injured wrist.”

Southern California claimed the top three spots of the individual leaderboard as Kyung Kim (70-70-73=213) recorded a one-shot victory over teammates Annie Park (77-68-69=214) and Doris Chen (72-67-75=214). Pepperdine teammates Grace Na (73-72-71=216) and Marissa Chow (72-70-74=214) finished in a tie for fourth.

UNCW returns to action March 21-23 as it takes part in the LSU Tiger Classic at The University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
