WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW women’s basketball team closes out the regular season Wednesday as it travels to league newcomer College of Charleston for a 7 p.m. contest at TD Arena.

The Seahawks (4-25; 3-12 CAA) return to the court Wednesday for the first time since a 56-45 setback at Drexel on Feb. 27. Junior Kelva Atkins scored 13 points to lead a UNCW attack that finished just 14-of-42 from the floor against the Dragons. Making her first career start, freshman D’Asia Cain chipped in nine points and fellow newcomer Brie Mobley added eight points.

College of Charleston (15-13; 8-7 CAA) heads into its regular-season finale looking to secure the No. 3 seed for the upcoming CAA Women’s Basketball Championship with a victory over the Seahawks. Senior Alyssa Frye and Afreyea Tolbert are tied for the team lead in scoring (14.3) while Tolbert sits second on the circuit in rebounds per game (9.0). Senior Jillian Brown quarterbacks a Cougars attack that sits second in the league in scoring offense (69.1) with a league-leading 5.3 assists per game average.

Wednesday’s game marks the 14th overall meeting between UNCW and the College of Charleston and the second as Colonial Athletic Association foes. The Seahawks hold a 7-6 lead in the all-time series and have won five of the last six meetings against the Cougars. College of Charleston won the most recent matchup between the two programs, a 67-53 decision at Trask Coliseum on Feb. 20.

UNCW will open the 2014 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship with the first-round contest on March 13 at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. The Seahawks will face either Northeastern or William & Mary in that contest, scheduled for a Noon start.
