WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Corey Dick’s two-run single in the seventh lifted UNCW past visiting VMI in the second game of the Hughes Bros. Challenge on Friday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks captured their sixth straight season opener with the late-inning victory over the Keydets. It was the season opener for both teams.
UNCW senior Ricky Holden (1-0) earned the win with two innings of hitless relief. VMI reliever Rian Ellis was saddled with the loss to fall to 0-1.
VMI’s Brandon Angus held game-high honors with three hits as the Keydets outhit the Seahawks, 9-5. Five different Seahawks accounted for all five hits.
Neither starter figured in the decision despite solid outings. VMI righthander Reed Garrett allowed three unearned runs over five innings, while senior lefthander Mat Batts fanned nine and allowed three runs, two earned, over five innings.
How it happened: Sophomore Terence Connelly opened the seventh with a walk and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Steven Linkous. Following a walk that put runners on first and second, VMI committed a fielding error that loaded the bases for Dick. The junior then singled through the right side to score the winning runs.
Prince of the bullpen: Senior righthander William Prince earned his first save since May 12, 2012 when he retired three of the four batters he faced in the ninth. He was the final of four relievers for UNCW, who combined to limit VMI to three hits and two walks over four innings.
Inside the box score: VMI landed its leadoff hitter on base safely in six-of-nine innings … UNCW, meanwhile, placed its leadoff hitter on base just once (Connelly, 7th) … UNCW pitchers held VMI to 1-for-9 hitting with two outs … UNCW advanced runners in 9-of-17 opportunities while VMI was 13-for-28 … Both teams combined to go 4-for-22 in RBI opportunities … The Keydets finished 0-for-4 with the bases loaded while UNCW was 1-for-1 (Dick).
Notes: Prince earned the win in the 2012 opener against Ohio, while Holden earned the win, in relief, last season against nationally-ranked Kent State … Terence Connelly scored twice and drew a pair of walks … Christian MacDonald also tossed a scoreless inning of relief for UNCW.
Up next: UNCW hosts Kentucky, an 8-3 winner over top-ranked Virginia on Friday, on Saturday at 4 p.m. VMI faces in-state foe Virginia at noon.
