|Cardona Scores Twice, Seahawks Fall, 6-3|
PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – UNCW junior Mateo Cardona scored twice and the Seahawks narrowed their deficit to one goal several times, but the Seahawks were unable to slow down nationally-ranked William & Mary as the Tribe advanced to the championship with a 6-3 win in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association men’s soccer championship on Thursday at Vidas Field.
The third-seeded Tribe, who improved to 11-4-2 with the win, advances to the CAA finals against the winner of Thursday evening’s Drexel-Delaware contest. The Seahawks, who entered the tournament as the two-seed saw their record drop to 9-6-2 with the setback.
“It’s a tough way to get knocked out of the tournament,” said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. “We’ve been solid all season defensively, but today we weren’t able to stop William & Mary. Credit goes to them and capitalizing on their chances.”
Cardona doubled his season total with his two-goal outing against W&M. The midfielder drew the Seahawks even in the 11th minute when he converted a cross from the rightside by David Sizemore. Cardona settled the cross, faked a shot then slipped low shot under the W&M keeper for the goal.
Cardona’s second goal came in the 48th minute, just 1:41 after W&M’s Jackson Eskay notched his second goal of the game in the 47th minute. Cardona curled a free kick inside the right post to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Tribe’s Chris Perez restored a two-goal lead, 4-2, with his marker in the 59th minute on a 20-yard blast. Perez also assisted on the first two goals for the Tribe.
UNCW managed to cut it to 4-3 less than two minutes later when Jamie Dell’s shot from the top of the penalty area was deflected by a Tribe defender and into the goal.
Chris Albiston and Ben Coffey scored for the Tribe in the 78th and 86th minutes, respectively, to round out the scoring for a 6-3 final.
In a model of efficiency, both teams combined for nine goals on just 20 shots with the Tribe holding an 11-9 advantage.
Mac Phillips and Sean Melvin each had one save for the Tribe and Seahawks, respectively.
