HUNT VALLEY, Maryland – The UNCW men finished third overall and the women came in seventh place at the Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships early Saturday at Oregon Ridge Park.

Competing for the sixth time this season and the second time at the course, the Seahawks featured some new faces in the front of the pack. As expected, however, William & Mary swept both races, claiming the women’s competition by a wide margin and winning the men’s race easily as well.

“It was an up and down day for us,” said Layne Schwier, UNCW’s distance coach. “We knew if we ran solid in the men’s race, we could be third. Casey (Buddenbaum) came through in an important meet and Dylan (Skinner) also had a solid day. For the most part, we were pleased with how the men raced and the result was what we had hoped.

“We had a lot of uncertainties going into the women’s race and we were disappointed. We haven’t had a solid fifth runner all season and some untimely injuries and illnesses have left us shorthanded.

“Haley (Kapheim) picked up some slack and led us today and Rachel (Quinn) and Michaela (Moran) were also solid. We’re getting tired of being outside the top half of the conference and need to regroup a bit, heal up some and give it one more go at the regionals in two weeks. We’ve got a lot of improvement still necessary before we deserve to be in the top half of the conference.”

In the men’s race, William & Mary totaled 25 points, followed by Northeastern (44), UNCW (89), College of Charleston (106) and Hofstra (115).

Buddenbaum, a junior from Harrisburg, N.C., paced the Seahawks for the first time this season, clocking a 26:34 over the hilly 8K layout for 16th place.

On the women’s side, the Tribe had a perfect score of 15 points, trailed by James Madison (81), Delaware (86), Northeastern (106), College of Charleston (150), Towson (155), UNCW (159) and Hofstra (229).

Kapheim was the top runner for the Seahawks for the second time this fall. The Monroe, N.C., runner finished 27th overall with a time of 23:29 on the 6K course.

The Seahawks wrap up the season on Saturday, Nov. 15, by competing in the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
