CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina – The UNCW women’s tennis team dropped three matches in the main singles draw and lost three doubles pairings on the second day of the Carolina Region ITA Regional Women’s Tennis Championships Friday  in Chapel Hill.

The Seahawks and second-year coach Evan Clark are making their second appearance of the fall season in the bracketed event at North Carolina’s Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

In Round of 32 doubles action early Friday, the Wake Forest tandem of Samantha Asch and Luisa Fernandez thumped UNCW’s Kelly Cameron and Miller Hales, 8-3.  Also, Wake’s Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner downed UNCW’s Olga Blank and Hollie Champion, 8-5.

Seahawk junior Hamilton Lovett and newcomer Alix Theodossiou defaulted their match to Duke’s Annie Mulholland and Chalena Scholl.

In singles play, South Carolina’s Katerina Popova zipped past junior Alyssa Ritchie, 6-2, 6-2, Duke’s Marianne Jodoin trounced senior Olga Blank, 6-1, 6-0, and Clemson’s Tristen Dewar defeated senior Angie Sekely, 6-2, 6-2.

The singles and doubles champions from the regional event earn an automatic berth to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
