BOONE, North Carolina – The UNCW women’s and men’s cross country teams finished fifth and sixth overall in unseasonably warm temperatures as the new season opened for six teams at the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State late Friday.

Florida State swept both competitions at the Don Kennedy Trails at the State Farm Fields. The Seminoles totaled a perfect 15 points in the women’s race and only 19 on the men’s side.

“It was a rough day for both teams, but we kind of expected it,” said Layne Schwier, UNCW’s assistant track & field and cross country coach. “We ran conservatively on purpose since it was our first race of the season. Our plan for both teams was to get out easy and then try to move up and finish strong.”

The Seahawk women finished fifth in the women’s race with 137 points, trailing FSU (15), Appalachian State (59), East Carolina (70) and USC Upstate (131). VMI finished sixth with 170 points.
