UNCW opened the 2013 season with a pair of road losses at South Carolina (2-0) and Charlotte (1-0) last weekend … The Seahawks started the season on the road for the third consecutive campaign … The last time UNCW began a season at home was the 2010 campaign … The Seahawks moved to 10-9-1 all-time in season openers with the setback to the Gamecocks … The Seahawks moved to 0-2-1 all-time against the Gamecocks … The contest marked the second time in three matchups that the two programs have opened the season against each other (2008) … UNCW dropped to 3-5 all-time versus the 49ers … Charlotte has won five of the last six meetings between the two programs, four of which have been decided by a single goal … Six freshman saw playing time during the opening weekend … Freshman Liisa Rahkola became the first rookie keeper to start a season opener since former standout Caitlin Hunter opened the 2009 campaign in goal.

Western Carolina opened the 2013 season last weekend with a pair of 2-0 victories over Lipscomb and Eastern Kentucky … The victory at EKU spoiled the home debut of new Colonel’s head coach Melissa Barnes, who took over the EKU program last April after spending five seasons as an assistant coach with the Seahawks … The Catamounts benefitted from a balanced attack during the opening weekend as four different players found the back of the net … Junior Jenny Lauer and freshman Carly Tintsman split the team’s keeper duties last weekend, teaming up to record five saves and two shutouts … Friday’s matchup marks the first ever meeting between the programs.
UNCG split a pair of double-overtime contests to open its 2013 season, defeating Hawai’i and falling to Washington by identical 1-0 margins last weekend on the island of O'ahu … Sophomore Chesney White was the hero in the Spartans’ victory over the Rainbow Warriors, heading home a cross from freshman Georgia Brown in the 104th minute … Sophomore Jamie Simmons started both games in goal and allowed just one goal in 210:50 of work … Sunday’s matchup marks the third meeting between the two state programs … The Spartans won both previous meetings, including the last matchup, a 2-1 triumph at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sept. 1, 2003.
