#23 UNCW Takes Down Top-Ranked Tar Heels, 9-8

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The Seahawks get back on the field this weekend, beginning on Friday with a 3 p.m. start at Towson in the opener of a Colonial Athletic Association series.

UNCW (31-11, 12-2 CAA) and the Tigers (19-20, 9-6 CAA) both faced ACC competition in midweek contests with the Seahawks edging top-ranked North Carolina, 9-8, on Tuesday in Chapel Hill, while the Tigers rallied late but came up short against in-state rival Maryland, 16-15, on Wednesday at Schuerholz Park.

Against UNC, Tyler Molinaro belted a two-run shot, his team-leading seventh homer of the season, in the eighth inning as UNCW erased an 8-7 deficit. The Seahawks trailed by scores of 6-0 after three and 8-6 after six. Kelly Secrest (2-0) earned the win with five and 2/3 innings of one-hit, shutout relief.

Towson, meanwhile, enters the season having dropped their last three, all one-run decisions. The Tigers got out to a fast start this season with a sweep of McNeese State and winning a series at Duke. They also swept Hofstra and sits tied for third with William & Mary in the conference standings.
