|Spartans Take Twinbill From Seahawks|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Sophomore Cheyenne Griffin hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to erase a one-run deficit and lead USC Upstate to a 4-3 victory over UNCW in the second game of a collegiate softball doubleheader Saturday at Boseman Field. The Spartans took the first contest of the twinbill by a 6-0 margin.
The Spartans improved to 21-2 overall with the sweep as they extended their winning streak to 12 games. The Seahawks, meanwhile, moved to 10-14 on the campaign. UNCW returns to action March 23 as it opens Colonial Athletic Association play with a Noon doubleheader against Hofstra.
Game one saw USC Upstate take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on run-scoring singles by sophomore Cheyenne Griffin and freshman Jessica Ujvari before doubling their advantage to 4-0 in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by freshman Mellena Helms. The Spartans closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run from Ujvari.
Ujvari was 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Spartans lineup in the opener. Junior Erin Schattle and sophomore Dana Landers were also 2-for-4 at the plate while Helms was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Junior Anna Miller picked up the win for the Spartans in game one to improve her record to 3-0 on the season. Miller scattered two hits and three walks in five innings in the circle. Senior Sam Poarch pitched the final two innings for USC Upstate and did not allow a hit as she issued one walk and struck out two.
Sophomore Casey Rowland took the loss for the Seahawks in game one to even her record at 6-6. Rowland allowed two unearned runs on four hits and one walk in three innings in the circle. Freshman Darian Roberts pitched the final four innings and allowed four runs on five hits.
Game two started out as a pitcher's duel as neither team was able to get on the board until the bottom of the fifth, when junior Morgan McCann connected for a three-run home run to give the Seahawks a 3-0 lead.
Upstate would cut into the UNCW advantage in the top of the sixth, using a two-out single from sophomore Kendall Settlemyre to plate Landers and junior Lindsay Kelly make it a 3-2 contest.
In the top of the seventh, the Spartans would be down to their final strike of the contest before Griffin connected on a full-count offering for a two-run home run that put Upstate in front, 4-3.
The Seahawks would threaten in the bottom half of the seventh as sophomore Jessica Rappe drew a leadoff walk, but Alexander was able to keep UNCW from plating the tying run as she struck out the next three batters she faced to give the Spartans a one-run victory.
Landers was 3-for-4 for the Spartans in the nightcap while Settlemyre and Helms were both 2-for-3.
Alexander got the start for the Spartans in game two and pitched four shutout innings before being replaced in the top of the fifth by freshman Jam Ujvari, who picked up the win to improve to 9-0 on the season as she surrendered three runs on three hits in two innings of work. Alexander returned in the top of the seventh and allowed just the leadoff walk to record her first save of the season. She scattered three hits and one walk in five innings while striking out four.
Junior KC Shue was 2-for-3 while McCann was 1-for-3 with the three-run home run to pace the Seahawks attack in game two. Poplin, junior Camry Wagner and sophomore Kristen Jernigan were also credited with base hits in the contest.
Freshman Kayla Pine took to the circle for the Seahawk in game two and pitched six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and one walk. Sophomore Jordyn Schmidt replaced Pine in the top of the seventh and surrendered two runs on two hits to move to 4-5 on the season.
