INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - The UNCW women's tennis team evened its record at 1-1 on a spring break trip to wintry Indiana by sweeping past Evansville, 5-0, early Tuesday at the Five Seasons Racquet Club. Playing indoors, the Seahawks improved to 5-4 on the season after winning the doubles point and capturing four singles matches. Evansville had its record evened at 5-5 this spring. Coach Evan Clark's club won a tight doubles point and that set the tone for singles play. UNCW's No. 3 team of Alyssa Ritchie and Christine Kharkevich trimmed Evansville's Gaby Fifer and Emily Richardson, 8-5, to be the first off the court before the Purple Aces claimed an 8-4 win at the top of the lineup when Natasha Jones and Marketa Trousilova defeated Angie Sekely and Olga Blank, 8-4. UNCW's tandem of Kelly Cameron and Miller Hales then came up big at No. 2 doubles, outlasting Kelsey Costales and Marina Moreno, 9-8 (5), for the all-important point. The Seahawks increased their lead to 2-0 when Cameron thumped Moreno, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles and hiked the margin to 3-0 behind Kharkevich's convincing 6-1, 6-3, victory over Richardson. Blank clinched the win by crushing Fifer, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles, and Sekely (No. 1) and Christina Riley (No. 2) had their close matches halted after Blank's decisive win. The Seahawks, 2-2 on the road this spring, move over to Butler and play the Bulldogs on Wednesday at 1 p.m. |
