Release: 02/19/2013 WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will collect donations of canned goods and money on Saturday, Feb. 23, to compete in the Colonial Athletic Association’s inaugural Food Drive Challenge. The SAAC will setup a donation table at two athletic events, with two student-athletes working the sites. The first table will be at Brooks Field when the baseball team takes on Lehigh at 2 p.m. The other collection point will be located in Trask Coliseum for the men’s basketball game against Delaware at 7 p.m. “This event shows our commitment to supporting the Wilmington community,” said Will Libous, UNCW’s Athletic Academic Coordinator and SAAC advisor. “It’s exciting to see all of the schools in the conference working together to support their local communities by helping to raise awareness for food donations to help fight hunger.” The project allows CAA student-athletes to compete in a non-athletic realm and institutions to address the need for donated food throughout their communities in an effort to stop hunger. The institution that collects the most pounds of nonperishable food items will win the event. UNCW has partnered with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, and community members can donate at either location. Monetary donations will be accepted and be converted into food contributions. The winner of the Food Drive Challenge will be announced in March and CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager will present the winning university with a trophy. |
