WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia - Led by First-Team All-CAA selection Stephanie Rose, a record seven UNCW players were recognized as the Colonial Athletic Association handed out its annual awards Thursday during the 2012 CAA Women's Soccer Championship banquet.
Rose was joined on the league's all-conference teams by fellow seniors Kim Currie and Caitlin Hunter, who were both Second-Team All-CAA selections and Lindsay Henry, who was a Third-Team All-CAA pick. Sophomore Stephanie Bronson and freshman Maddie McCormick were all Third-Team All-CAA honorees while McCormick and fellow newcomer Lindsey Byrne were both named to the CAA's All-Rookie Team. The seven honorees are the most in a single season for UNCW, breaking the old mark of six set during the 2010 campaign. The first player in school history to earn All-CAA distinction in each of her four seasons with the program, Rose paced the league in scoring with 37 points in 2012, scoring a league-high 13 goals while dishing out a school-record 11 assists. A native of Jacksonville, N.C., Rose paced the squad with four-game winning goals, highlighted by game-winning strikes against league foes Northeastern, James Madison and George Mason, and assisted on the game-winning tally in victories over non-conference foes Campbell and Coastal Carolina. Currie earns All-CAA recognition for the first time in her career after a senior season that saw her start all 19 games during the regular season. The Lumberton, N.C., product finished the regular season tied for third on the team in scoring with 13 points, recording four goals and adding five assists. She was named a Primetime Player by Collegesoccer360.com after earning MVP honors at the UNCW Courtyard Marriott Wilmington Invitational in September. Hunter garners All-CAA honors for the second time in her four seasons in the Port City after ranking among the CAA leaders in save percentage (.862/1st), goals against average (0.88/3rd) and shutouts (7/2nd) during the regular season. The Ashburn, Va., native established new single-season marks for a shutouts and wins (12) by a UNCW keeper and was named to the Soccer America Women's Team-of-the-Week after making 10 saves in a 0-0 draw against then-No. 3 Wake Forest in August. Henry receives her second All-CAA recognition after earning First-Team honors during the 2010 campaign. A native of Ashburn, Va., Henry started all 17 games played during the regular season and played a key role in a Seahawks defense that allowed just 17 goals during the regular season while matching a program record with nine shutouts. Henry also figured into the team's potent offensive attack from the backline, recording three points on a goal and an assist. Bronson was honored as an All-CAA pick in her first season with the program following a 2012 campaign that saw her finish tied for third on the team in scoring with 13 points on five goals and three assists. The Raleigh, N.C., product started all but one game in the midfield and finished the regular season by finding the back of the net in four of the Seahawks' final five contests. McCormick becomes the first Seahawk player since Rose in 2009 to earn both All-CAA and All-Rookie Team distinction in the same season as she ended the regular season second on the team in scoring with 15 points on six goals and three assists. A native of Newark, Del., McCormick became the first UNCW player since the 2004 season to record a hat trick when she found the back of the net three times in the Seahawks' 5-2 victory at Towson on Oct. 19. Byrne garners All-Rookie Team honors following a freshman season that saw her start all 18 games played during the regular season. The Charlotte, N.C., product played a key role on the Seahawks backline, helping the squad limit opponents to just 17 goals during the regular season while matching a program record with nine shutouts. Byrne also figured into the team's offensive output, recording three assists. The third seed in the 2012 CAA Women's Soccer Championship, UNCW will square off against second-seeded Drexel at 5 p.m. Friday in the first semifinal at Albert-Daly Field.
