CARY, North Carolina - UNCW seniors Chris Cooprider and Kosta Blank dropped a straight set decision to 16th-ranked Raphael Hemmeier and Henrique Cunha of Duke early Monday in the doubles final at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships.
Cooprider and Blank, who have propelled the Seahawks to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, lost, 6-2, 6-3, to the Blue Devil tandem at Cary Tennis Park.
It marked the first time the Seahawks have placed a team in the doubles final at the Carolina Regional event.
"I'm very proud of all eight players that came," said Mait DuBois, UNCW's fifth-year head coach. "We had some significant results in singles and doubles. I was very pleased with our overall performance.
"Chris and Kosta showed that they have the ability to play with anyone in the country. Hopefully, they will receive a wild card invitation to the national indoors to have another opportunity to show their skills."
Blank, from Winnipeg, Canada, said the experience in Cary will only benefit the emerging doubles team.
"It was a tough match and we had some chances," he said. "It's been a great experience playing some of the top players in the country. We got better with each match because we increased our intensity level and followed through with our game plan. This really helped us out and showed what we still need to work on."
