WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Freshman Jill Mulholland scored in the 87th minute to break a
scoreless tie and lift Hofstra to a 1-0 victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic
Association women's soccer action Thursday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
In the league opener for both programs, The Pride improved to 5-4-0 overall while the Seahawks slipped to 5-4-1. Mulholland's game-winning strike came at the 86:33 mark of the contest as she converted a rebound opportunity from close range after sophomore Lulu Echeverry rang a shot attempt off the right post during a Hofstra corner kick opportunity. The goal was Mulholland's fourth of the season and her second game-winning marker. UNCW's best opportunity to score came earlier in the second half as freshman defender Lindsey Byrne got behind the Pride defense in the 64th minute and let a shot go that Hofstra junior Emily Morphitis was able to keep out of the net with a diving save. Morphitis made three saves for the Pride as she recorded her third shutout of the season. Senior keeper Caitlin Hunter finished with five stops for the Seahawks. UNCW held a 12-10 edge in shots during the contest while the Pride posted a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks taken. Both teams return to action Sunday with league contests. UNCW travels to Northeastern while Hofstra entertains Georgia State. Both games are scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff. |
