SPARTANBURG, South Carolina - The UNCW women's golf team combined for a final round 306 to claim third place in Terrier Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Spartanburg on Tuesday.
The Seahawks ended the 36-hole event with a two-day total of 602 (296-306), five shots back of second place Gardner-Webb (294-303=597).
"We were in a good position heading into today's final round, but we were unable to capitalize on the opportunity," said UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho. "Our ball striking was solid in both rounds, but our wedge play and putting were not what we wanted them to be and I think as a result of that we got frustrated as the tournament went on and started to make mistakes. I saw many positives out of the team, but we must continue to improve in order to be successful the next time we are in this position."
UNC Pembroke captured the team title after carding a final round 294 to overcome a seven-stroke deficit and record a two-stroke victory with a tournament scorecard of 595 (301-294). Host Wofford posted a final-round low 293 to claim fourth with a 604 (311-293) result.
Junior Laverry Kumar fired a two-over-par 74 on Tuesday to earn a share of fourth place with a 36-hole scorecard of 146 (72-74). Fellow junior Lori Beth Adams posted a final-round 78 to finish in a six-way tie for eighth at 148 (70-78).
Freshman Johanna Bjoerk recorded a 76 to earn a share of 17th place with a 151 (75-76) tournament total. Sophomore Mallory Warrick (79-79=157/T-32nd) and senior Danielle Lamy (83-80=163/57th) rounded out UNCW's lineup.
"Laverry had a very solid tournament, especially considering she was not at 100 percent due to an injury she suffered last week," said Ho. "Lori Beth had an excellent opening round and was playing well today until two bad holes towards the end derailed her round. Mallory and Danielle were playing very well today early on as well, but both had tough finishes that will improve with experience. Johanna handled herself very well for her first collegiate tournament. She put together two solid rounds and will only get better as she gets more acclimated."
Gardner-Webb's Mary Donovan led wire-to-wire to capture individual medalist honors, carding a final-round 75 to post a one-stroke victory with a one-under-par finish of 143 (68-75). Wofford's Anne Marie Covar (73-71) and Mercer's Mary Alice Murphy (74-70) finished tied for second as both players ended the event at even par.
UNCW returns to action Sept. 17-18 as it competes in the Louisville Cardinal Cup at the Cardinal Club Golf Course in Louisville, Ky.
