WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW women's soccer team captured the UNCW Courtyard Marriott Wilmington Invitational championship early Sunday by trouncing Troy, 4-0, at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. It was the fourth straight win for Paul Cairney's improving team.
UNCW, 4-2-1, dominated the Trojans from the opening kick-off, scoring three goals in the first period and outshooting the Alabama club, 22-3, under overcast skies. The Seahawks kept a clean sheet in both games of the tournament after blanking Campbell, 3-0, in the opener Friday. Troy, meanwhile, went 1-1-0 in the event after beating Elon, 2-1, in an overtime match Friday. The Trojans stand at 5-3-1 on the season after the tournament split. The Seahawks opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest when junior midfielder Nicole Costa netted her second goal of the season. Costa found herself on the end of fellow junior midfielder Amanda Holmes' cross from the right flank and finished the goal with one touch into the middle of the net. UNCW's midfield attack added a second goal in the ninth minute as senior midfielder Kim Currie broke away from the defense and launched a shot off that deflected off the left post from 18 yards out to beat Troy keeper Madison Winter. Putting the game away early, Costa found the back of the net again in the 21st minutes, thanks to Stephanie Rose's cross into the center of the box. Costa's second goal of the game gave UNCW a 3-0 cushion going into the half. The Seahawks added another insurance goal in the 56th minute after a series of passes led to a shot from the top of the box by Holmes into the lower left corner. Currie and freshman midfielder Morgan Leyble were credited with assists on the goal. The Seahawks put their hot streak on the line Thursday night when they travel to Conway, S.C., to face Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. The team then returns home Sunday, Sept. 16, toface in-state rival ECU at 7 p.m. Courtyard Wilmington Marriott All-Tournament Team Nicole Costa (UNCW) Lindsay Henry (UNCW) Jen Ludemann (UNCW) Stephanie Rose (UNCW) Paige McMillan (Troy) Cecilia Thorngren (Troy) Chelsey Williams (Troy) Melissa Messier (Campbell) Caitlin Schneider (Campbell) Caroline O'Dee (Elon) MVP - Kim Currie (UNCW) |
