WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW swimming and diving coach Dave Allen and track and field coach Jim Sprecher are bringing the 2012 Summer Olympic Games to Wilmington. Well, sort of.
Local NBC affiliate WECT-TV has enlisted the two veteran Seahawk coaches to provide insight into their sports during special in-studio segments on the 5:30 p.m. show over the next two weeks.
"Our parent company, Raycom, encouraged us to come up with something different with our coverage," said Bob Bonner, sports director at WECT-TV. "Our thought was that we had two coaches who had been successful in these particular events and why not get them on the show and tell what they know."
Allen, a 34-year coaching veteran who has guided the UNCW men's team to 11 consecutive Colonial Athletic Association men's championships, will appear on four days, July 30 through Aug. 2. Coincidentally, five Seahawk swimmers just competed in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials two weeks ago in Omaha, Neb.
Sprecher, meanwhile, has coached the sport 13 years at UNCW, piloting the Seahawks to seven conference titles. He also worked previously with U.S. Olympian Michael Johnson during his spectacular career at Baylor. Sprecher will be featured on the show on five days, Aug. 6-10, when track and field takes center stage.
