WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW baseball players Andrew Cain and Tyler DeLoach were selected on Wednesday, the third day of the Major League Baseball First-year Player Draft, by the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, respectively.

Also being drafted was incoming freshman righthanded pitcher Evan Phillips, who was taken by the Kansas City Royals in the 33rd round.

Cain, who was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2011, returned for his senior season and helped lead the Seahawks to their first Colonial Athletic Association championship since 2006 and NCAA tournament appearance since 2008. He was taken in the 24th round and will join former Seahawk relief standout Stephen Harrold, who was drafted by the Giants in 2010.

Cain earned first-team All-CAA honors after hitting .322 with a career-high 12 home runs. He scored a career-best 59 runs and knocked in 43, third on the team. In centerfield, he committed just two errors in 176 total chances. In his final collegiate at bat, Cain belted a home run against NC State in the Raleigh Regional.

DeLoach, meanwhile, was selected by the Angels in the 26th round. The hard-throwing lefthander made 21 appearances, including our starts, as a junior. He finished with a 3-2 record and a save while fashioning a 4.91 ERA. In 36 2/3 innings, DeLoach struck out 43 batters and held opponents to a .230 batting average.

His best performance of the season was a 6 1/3 inning start against nationally-ranked East Carolina, in Greenville, N.C., where he held the Pirates to two hits and a run.

Rounding out the UNCW draftees was Phillips, who signed with the Seahawks in the fall of 2011. Phillips was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 33rd round. KC previously selected current Seahawk Jordan Ramsey in the 2011 draft.

With the drafts of Cain and DeLoach, the Seahawks have now totaled 40 players drafted since 1992, Head Coach Mark Scalf's first season. Since 2003, the number of draft picks from UNCW is 24.
