|Seahawks Fall Short, 4-2, At No. 7 UNC|
CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - UNCW rallied with two runs in the final three innings but was unable to overcome an early deficit as seventh-ranked North Carolina edged the Seahawks, 4-2, on Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium.
The Tar Heels ran their record to 35-13 while the Seahawks dipped to 29-19.
UNC plated four runs without an official at bat as three runs scored on sacrifice flies and the final on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
UNCW starter Kelly Secrest (2-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing a run on three hits and a pair of walks.
Adam Griffin gave UNC the lead in the third inning with the first of his two sacrifice flies that scored Tommy Coyle, who led off the inning with a single.
In the fourth, Holberton triple to open the inning against UNCW reliever Ricky Holden. He would score one batter later when Griffin lifted another sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
The eventual winning margin would come in the sixth inning as the Tar Heels scored twice without a hit. UNC was able to take advantage of three walks and a hit batter in the inning. Chaz Frank knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Colin Moran, who collected two hits on the night, plated the second after being hit by a pitch.
The Seahawks narrowed their deficit to 4-2 with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Michael Bass tripled in Corey Dick in the seventh with two out and Thomas Pope singled in Andrew Cain (2-for-3) in the eighth, also with two out.
Benton Moss (5-2) earned the win, going three innings in as predetermined start. Michael Morin earned his 14th save of the season.
The Seahawks visit William & Mary in Colonial Athletic Association action this week for a three-game series beginning on Thursday with a 7 p.m. start.
