CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia – Fueled by a two-run single from Chris Bresnahan in the eighth inning, Elon outscored UNCW, 3-0, over the final three innings to slip past the Seahawks, 10-7, in the second game of the NCAA Charlottesville Regional on Friday at Davenport Field.

The Seahawks (37-22) drop into the loser’s bracket and will face Army, a 2-1 loser to Virginia in game one, on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Phoenix (33-28), meanwhile will play the Cavaliers at 6 p.m.

Antonio Alvarez shined for the Phoenix at the plate, going 2-for-4, both doubles, with four runs batted in and three runs scored. Wil Leathers came off the bench and finished with two hits, including a two-run pinch hit homer in a five-run sixth inning.

Terence Connelly and Corey Dick had three hits apiece. Connelly reached base safely in all five plate appearances, scored twice and knocked in two. Andy Austin added two hits and also drove in two runs.

Andrew MacDonald (5-1) earned the win in relief, allowing just two hits and no runs over three and 1/3 innings.

UNCW starter Mat Batts (9-4) dropped his third consecutive start after allowing eight runs, seven earned, over six-plus innings.

Up next: The Seahawks face Army at 1 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game. Jordan Ramsey (6-6) will make the start for UNCW while the Black Knights counter with Alex Robinett.

How it happened: The Seahawks tied the game at 7-all with two runs in the sixth, but Elon regained the lead in the top of the seventh. Bresnahan singled off Batts to open the frame and moved into scoring position on an errant pickoff attempt by reliever Justin Livengood. Bresnahan then moved to third on a misplayed bunt and scored one batter later on a ground ball to third to give Elon the lead, 8-7.

Inside the numbers: Offensively, Elon landed its leadoff batter on base four times and saw three of them come around to score … The Phoenix also plated 4-of-5 runners from third with less than two out … Ryan LaGrange was the lone Seahawk to open an inning by reaching safely with a single to open the second inning … UNCW knocked in six runs with two out while Elon collected five, two-out RBI’s.

Notes: The Seahawks dropped to 2-1 against Elon in NCAA competition … The Phoenix ran their winning streak to six … LaGrange has reached base safely in 10 straight contests … Connelly moved to within one hit by pitch of tying the UNCW single season record of 18 (Mark Carver, 2008) … Michael Bass moved into a tie for eighth on UNCW’s single season stolen base list with 25 and is now in sole possession of third with 75 career stolen bases.
