About UNCW Athletics

The athletic department of The University of North Carolina at Wilmington operates within the guidelines set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

UNC Wilmington, which sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports, has held Division I membership in the NCAA since the 1977-78 season. The NCAA administers 79 championships in three divisions in 21 sports. More than 18,000 men and women student-athletes compete annually in these events, designed to determine national champions.

All rules, policies, procedures, directions and goals of the NCAA are determined by the colleges and universities working and voting together in a common body.
