WILMINGTON, N.C. ? Veteran UNC Wilmington track and field coach Jim Sprecher has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's Coach-of-the-Year for the third consecutive year and the seventh time in his ultra-successful career.
Sprecher recently led the Seahawks to their 10th CAA championship overall and their fourth crown in the last five years with a 26-point victory over William & Mary in Towson, Md.
“It's a reflection of all the hard work by our assistant coaches, team captains and student-athletes,” said Sprecher. “This past season was one of my most rewarding years because most of the opposing coaches considered us to be in a rebuilding year. It's a great honor, and I share it with many individuals.”
Sprecher was previously named CAA Coach-of-the-Year in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2007 and 2008. He is the fifth UNCW coach to earn the league's top coaching award in 2008-09, joining Paul Cairney (women's soccer), Aidan Heaney (men's soccer), Dave Allen (men's swimming and diving) and Mait DuBois (men's tennis).
