WILMINGTON, N.C. ? UNC Wilmington women's soccer signee Stephanie Rose has been named the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association's Player-of-the-Year for the 2009 season, organization officials announced Sunday.
Rose is the first White Oak player to receive the honor. She was also named to the All-State Team for the third consecutive season and was chosen as NCHSAA Championship MVP for the second straight season.
“This is a great honor for Stephanie,” said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. “As a player, she is a tough competitor and has been well coached in club soccer by Roger Carroll and at White Oak by Buddy Carroll. However, soccer is a team sport and her accomplishment could not have been achieved without the help of her teammates. Stephanie will be the first to share this honor with her team and her coaches. I am very happy for her and her family to receive this accolade.”
Rose tallied 121 points on 50 goals and 21 assists in leading a White Oak squad that averaged more than seven goals a game to an undefeated 22-0 mark and its state-record fourth straight NCHSAA class 3-A crown. The Vikings also became just the second school in state history to win four straight state titles, joining 4-A Raleigh Broughton as the only schools to accomplish the feat. Rose also helped White Oak go undefeated in its final 40 matches with her in the lineup, including a 29-match win streak.
Rose, along with White Oak teammate Krystal Tucker, is part of a seven-player signing class that will join the Seahawks for the 2009-10 season. Also part of the signing class is Jennifer Ludemann (Wesleyan Christian Academy), who joined Rose in earning All-State Team accolades from the NCSCA.
