UNCW Track Heads To Greensboro For NCAA East Regional

WILMINGTON, N.C. ? Senior sprinter John Carr leads a contingent of six UNC Wilmington track and field athletes competing at the NCAA East Regional this weekend in Greensboro, N.C. The regional opens on Friday and concludes on Saturday.

Joining Carr are seniors Aisha Jones and Jaraea Shepherd on the women's side, while senior Brandyn Mitchell, junior Devon Watlington and sophomore Justin Prevette are also scheduled to represent the three-time defending Colonial Athletic Association champions.

Carr has fashioned a spectacular senior campaign that includes a pair of school records in the 100 and 200 Meters, the same events he will run this weekend. The Wallace, N.C., speedster finished second last week in the 200 Meters at the IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J. He also finished fifth in the 100 Meters. Earlier this spring, he smashed the school record in the 100 with a time of 10.39 seconds at the Mountain Vs. Beaches Meet in Cullowhee, N.C.

Jones and Shepherd, meanwhile, will also compete in two events apiece as they look to wrap up their final seasons in style. Jones qualified for the regionals in the 100 Meter Hurdles and High Jump. She won the CAA title in the 100 Meters with a time of 13.95 and jumped 5-8 3/4 at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational to achieve a regional qualifying mark.

Shepherd used the conference championship qualification route to advance to the regionals. Shepherd won both the Hammer and Discus Throws at the CAA Championships with distances of 163-8 and 146-2, respectively.

Mitchell won the CAA Long Jump title with a mark of 24-7 3/4, but bettered his qualifying mark with a jump of 25 feet at the UNC Elite Meet in May.

In just his second year of college track and field, Prevette set the school record in the Long Jump with a leap of 25-6 1/4 at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational. At the CAA Championships, he finished fourth with a mark of 23-5 1/4.

Watlington rounds out UNCW's competitors when he runs the 110 and 400 Hurdles. Watlington captured the conference title with a time of 14.67, but he had already qualified after running 14.43 at the Mountains Vs. Beaches Meet. In the 400 Hurdles, Watlington recorded a qualifying time of 52.57 at the CCU Shamrock Invitational. In his last outing, he finished sixth in the 400 Hurdles at the IC4A Championships with a time of 51.84.

The regional opens on Friday with the Javelin and Hammer Throws at 11 a.m.
