WILMINGTON, N.C. ? No. 20 East Carolina built a 5-0 lead after two innings and Ryan Wood hit for the cycle and drove in four runs as the Pirates cruised to an easy 12-5 win over UNC Wilmington on Tuesday at Brooks Field.
The Pirates improved to 38-15 with the victory while the Seahawks fell to 26-20. ECU won the season series, two games to one.
ECU starter Mike Anderson (1-1) evened his record at with the win. Anderson, in a predetermined start, scattered three hits over 1 2/3 innings and struck out two. The Pirates walked seven, but held the Seahawks in check, allowing two hits over the final 4 2/3 innings.
Wood led a 15-hit Pirate attack which included eight extra base hits.
Junior Ben Thielsen led UNCW with two hits and raised his batting average to .302.
Wood put the Pirates in front in the top of the first with a solo homer to right off loser Jesse Haney (2-4).
ECU used the long ball in the top of the second to establish a 3-0 lead against Haney. Haney hit Devin Harris with a 1-2 fastball to open the inning and Dustin Harrington followed with a two-run shot to center. ECU added a pair of unearned runs later in the inning after a pair of miscues. Wood knocked in his second run of the game with a RBI single and Stephen Batts, who finished with three hits and a pair of RBIs, followed with a single up the middle one batter later.
The Seahawks had an opportunity to break into the scoring column loading the bases in the bottom of the second, but junior Grayson Evans fanned on three straight strikes from reliever Bailey Daniels to end the rally.
ECU added to its lead in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-0. Jared Avchen, who finished with two hits, led off with a double to left and moved to third on a passed ball. He would score two batters later when Wood tripled to center on a poorly played ball. Wood scored later on a wild pitch by sophomore reliever Daniel Cropper.
A four-run fourth narrowed the deficit to 7-4 for the Seahawks. UNCW loaded the bases again in the fourth after Daniels walked three straight. Junior Bobby Leeper lined a two-run single to left off reliever Britton Cole for UNCW's first runs of the game. Holt added two more runs with a two-out double to left.
ECU rebounded in the fifth with five runs to take a 12-4 lead. Wood completed the cycle with a RBI double. Trent Whitehead had a RBI double earlier in the inning.
Thielsen knocked in junior Marc Locklear with a two-out single in the seventh. Locklear led off the inning with a triple into the right field corner off reliever Michael Wright.
The Seahawks close out their regular season with three games at Old Dominion. The series opens Thursday at 7 p.m.
Notes: Freshman Andrew Cain left the game after suffering an apparent neck injury in the seventh inning ... Marc Locklear's triple in the seventh was UNCW's 19th of the season, a new single season record ... Matt Holt extended his hitting streak to 11 games in the fourth inning with a double.
