WILMINGTON, N.C. ? Soccer standouts Devan Carroll and Kelly Renkin received the Thomas V. Moseley Award as UNC Wilmington's top student-athletes for 2008-09 during Monday's annual athletic awards banquet at the Burney Center.
In other major awards, Mick Glassmacher and Aisha Jones were honored with the Chancellor's Cup Awards, Darion Jeralds was the recipient of the Soaring Seahawk Award, Herbert Fisher was presented the William J. Brooks Distinguished Service Award, and the baseball squad garnered the Team Leadership Award for the second consecutive year.
A junior from Jacksonville, N.C., Carroll spearheaded UNCW's run to the CAA regular season men's soccer title and one of the best seasons in the school's history. He led the Seahawks in scoring with nine goals and two assists in the fall, becoming UNCW's first CAA Player-of-the-Year in men's soccer. Carroll collected three game-winning goals and turned in a hat trick in UNCW's 4-0 victory over CAA power William & Mary.
Renkin, a senior from Midlothian, Va., closed out her outstanding four-year career in fine fashion. She was named First-Team All-CAA for the third straight year and sparked the women's soccer team to a second-place finish in the competitive CAA. She started all 20 games for the Seahawks, finishing with six goals and three assists for Paul Cairney's club.
Glassmacher, meanwhile, came to UNCW to play baseball, but wound up excelling in track and field as a thrower. He finished second in the javelin at the 2009 CAA Track and Field Championships and plans to attend law school in the near future. The Fairfax Station, Va., product has a 3.50 grade point average in Business Administration and Marketing.
Jones, meanwhile, holds a 3.47 GPA in Exercise Science and is headed to Chapel Hill next fall to enroll in the School of Physical Therapy. She recently won the High Jump and Hurdles at the CAA Championships and finished second in the High Jump at the Penn Relays.
The Soaring Seahawk Award went to a men's basketball player for the second time in as many years. Todd Hendley won last year's inaugural award and junior Darion Jeralds collected the honor this year. The Winston-Salem, N.C., resident is a two-time member of the CAA's All-Academic Team and was named the league's Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year in men's hoops. In early March, Hendley received the prestigious Dean Ehlers Leadership Award at the CAA's post-season banquet for his leadership ability and service on and off the basketball court.
Fisher, meanwhile, received the William J. Brooks Distinguished Service Award, established in 1991 to recognize individuals who have contributed their time and talents to the betterment of the program. A longtime supporter of the Seahawks, Fisher provided funding for two of the newest buildings on campus, the Fisher Student Center and the Fisher Baseball Field House.
For the ninth year, the department presented the Team Leadership Award to recognize an athletic team that demonstrated excellent leadership skills through community service, charitable and educational events
With nearly 500 volunteer hours logged, the baseball team participated in numerous community service projects, including Freshman Move-In, Adopt-A-Highway, Stop Hunger Now, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, Adopt-An-Angel, the Salvation Army Coat Drive, Relay for Life and the MS Foundation.
