WILMINGTON, N.C. ? Brad Knighton's debut in Major League Soccer was a memorable one to say the least as the former UNC Wilmington star made three saves as the New England Revolution fashioned a 1-all draw with MLS Cup finalist New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
“I was both excited and nervous. I'd waited 2 1/2 years for this opportunity,” said Knighton, who only learned of his starting earlier in the day.
Knighton had barely settled in and fought off his nervous excitement when Juan Pablo Angel, a MLS All-Star in both 2007 and 2008, set up to take a free kick from 18 yards out, just three minutes into the contest. “I was thinking to myself, this is a great beginning to my first game,” said Knighton. Angel's blast caught the wall in front and deflected out of the penalty area.
His second test of the first half came in the 12th minute when Macoumba Kandji's shot from the right side that was blocked by Knighton, who came off his line. “Kandji went for the far post and I was able to get a touch on the ball. I had faced him when we were both playing in the USL, he with Atlanta and I was on loan to Portland.”
Angel had another opportunity to score, this time in the second half. “Angel is a strong player and is known for his ability to collect served balls and convert them.” Angel managed to get a head on a cross, but Knighton was up to the task and made the save.
Knighton's only goal allowed on the evening was an own goal as a cross from the left side was deflected inside the near post by a New England defender.
New England salvaged a draw with goal in the 90th minute by Kenny Mansally.
“I've been fortunate to learn from one of the best in the game (Matt Reis). He's very professional and has helped me make the transition.”
The Revolution returns to action on April 4, when they host FC Dallas in their home opener at Gillette Stadium.
