|Baseball Preview: Campbell|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The Seahawks open a stretch tonight that sees them play nine of their next 11 games at Brooks Field. UNCW will host Campbell this evening to open the stretch. The two long-time rivals renew their series following a two-year hiatus, last meeting in 2011.
UNCW dropped its series over the weekend at William & Mary despite receiving a dominant pitching performance from senior Mat Batts, who was named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week. Batts held the nation’s top offensive team in check, allowing one run over eight innings while striking out a career-high 12 batters. The Tribe led the nation in six offensive categories, including batting average, runs, runs per game, slugging percentage, home runs and doubles.
Batts moved into fifth on UNCW’s all-time strikeout list and ranks eighth nationally in strikeouts with 61 and is 14th in strikeouts per walk (8.71).
The Camels are in second place in the North Division of the Big South Conference. CU swept Presbyterian over the weekend and held the Blue Hose to just two runs.
UNCW visits North Carolina Central on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. start before returning to Brooks Field and conference play when they host Hofstra for a three-game series beginning on Friday with a 6 p.m. start. Saturday will be the annual Miracle League Day game with the Seahawks donning specially designed uniforms that will be auctioned off during the 2 p.m. start.
