|Batts Named CAA Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW senior Mat Batts was honored for the second time in as many weeks by the Colonial Athletic Association following his dominant start against William & Mary, the nation’s top offensive program, in an 8-2 win last Friday.
Batts, who picked up his first win of the season, held the Tribe in check over eight innings, allowing just one run on four hits, a pair of walks and hit batters. Batts set a career-high with 12 strikeouts, besting his previous high of 11, done on three occasions.
The weekly honor is the sixth in Batts’ career and second this season. He was perfect through the first 4.1 innings before allowing a double.
His 12 strikeouts also lifted him into fifth on UNCW’s all-time strike outs list. He enters his next start this weekend as the league’s leader with 61 strikeouts.
UNCW hosts Campbell on Tuesday and visits North Carolina Central on Wednesday. Both games are set for 6 p.m. starts. The Seahawks return to conference place on Friday with a 6 p.m. start against Hofstra in the first of a three-game set.
