WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Sam Williams has become the fourth UNCW men’s tennis player to be recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association this spring for his play in singles.

Williams, from Bristol, England, was named CAA Men’s Tennis Singles Co-Player-of-the-Week with William & Mary’s Damon Niquet.

Williams won both of his outings last week as the Seahawks pushed their winning streak to five matches with key road victories at No. 37 VCU and Old Dominion. The Seahawks scaled to No. 44 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s weekly poll with the pair of wins.

Williams swamped VCU’s Nick Jones, 6-0, 6-0, on Friday in Richmond and then followed that up by downing ODU’s Jonas Kuwert, 6-4, 6-3, early Saturday.

The 6-5 performer improved to 9-6 on the season in singles and has played the top three positions for Coach Mait DuBois and the Seahawks.

"Sam was a huge part of our quality wins last weekend and I was very pleased that he was recognized by the CAA,” said seventh-year Head Coach Mait DuBois. “In team tennis, when a player wins quickly and so decisively, it gives a lot of confidence to his teammates and naturally puts pressure on the opposing team. On top of that, Sam brings great energy and is very vocal when he plays. He had a great all-around weekend for us."

The men’s team, 11-6, puts its six-game winning streak on the line Saturday when rival East Carolina visits for a 2 p.m. match at the UNCW Courts.
