|Seahawks Complete Homestand With Split|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team split a mid-week doubleheader Thursday at Boseman Field, falling to Marshall, 8-5, in the opener before defeating North Carolina A&T, 3-2, in eight innings in the nightcap.
The Seahawks moved to 13-14 on the season with the split as it brought to a close a three-week homestand with the two non-conference contests.
UP NEXT: UNCW opens Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday as it faces Drexel in an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Marshall): Trailing 5-4 in the top of the fourth, Marshall used four hits, highlighted by a two-run single by senior Savanah Webster and a two-run home run by sophomore Shaelynn Braxton, to build an 8-5 cushion.
The Seahawks had a chance to cut into the Thundering Herd advantage in the sixth, putting their first two runners of the frame on base to bring the potential tying run to the plate. Thundering Herd freshman Lindsey Fadnek worked out of the jam, however, retiring the next three batters she faced to end the threat.
Earlier in the contest, Marshall took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an error, only to see UNCW plate three runs on a bases-loaded double from sophomore Erin Brown to build a 3-1 cushion.
The two teams traded runs in the third. The Thundering Herd used a two-run home run by Webster and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Alyssa Cook to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the frame before UNCW countered with two runs on a sacrifice fly by senior Casey Shue and a triple by junior Casey Rowland to regain the lead, 5-4, and set up Marshall’s comeback.
AT THE PLATE (Marshall): Webster was 2-for-3 with four RBI and Shaelynn Braxton went 2-for-4 with two RBI to highlight a Marshall roster that finished with seven hits. Freshman Morgan Zerkle was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Erin Brown was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Rowland and junior Jessica Rappe accounted for the Seahawks other two hits in the contest.
IN THE CIRCLE (Marshall): Fadnek got the win for Marshall as she improved to 3-5 on the season. In four innings of relief, Fadnek did not allow a hit as she struck out five and walked two.
Freshman Peyton Jordan took the loss for the Seahawks to slip to 5-8 on the campaign. Jordan allowed eight runs on seven hits and two walks in 3.2 innings of work. Sophomore Kayla Pine and Rowland combined to pitch the final 3.1 innings, teaming up to limit the Thundering Herd to just one walk in that span.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE (Marshall): Both teams left six runners on base …. The Seahawks were retired in order in three of their final four trips to the plate … Rowland faced just one batter over the limit as she retired the final seven batters she faced … Rowland also recorded seven of her nine outs by way of strikeout … Marshall’s top three hitters went 5-for-10 with six runs scored and four RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED (North Carolina A&T): The two teams traded runs in the first inning as North Carolina A&T took a 1-0 lead on wild pitch that scored junior Zabresha Blakeney while UNCW counted with a RBI double by Chamblee and a sacrifice fly by Rappe to give the Seahawks a 2-1 edge.
The Lady Aggies would tie the game at 2-all in the top of the third as a one-out double by freshman Dasia Moore brought home senior Alejandra Barcenas.
The score would remain tied at 2-2 until the bottom of the eighth, when with the international tie breaker in effect, a sacrifice fly by Rowland plated Rappe from third for the game-winning run.
AT THE PLATE (North Carolina A&T): Junior Kristen Jernigan went 2-for-3 while Chamblee was 1-for-3 with a RBI to lead UNCW. Rappe and Rowland were both credited with RBI on sacrifice flies.
Barcenas, Blakeney and Moore all went 2-for-4 to pace a North Carolina A&T line up that finished with seven hits.
IN THE CIRCLE (North Carolina A&T): Rowland picked up the win for UNCW to improve to 7-5 on the season as she allowed just two hits and one walk in five innings of relief. She struck out eight.
Sophomore Janika May took the loss for North Carolina A&T to slip to 4-6 on the campaign. In 5.1 innings in the circle in relief, May surrendered one unearned run on two hits and one walk.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE (North Carolina A&T): The two teams combined for 19 runner on base (NC A&T 11, UNCW 8) … The top four hitters of the Lady Aggies lineup went 8-of-14 at the plate while the bottom five hitters were a combined 0-for-20 … The top three hitters of the UNCW lineup all had one hit each … The two teams combined to put their leadoff runner aboard in just five of 16 opportunities.
