WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Casey Rowland matched her career high with 12 strikeouts to lead UNCW to a 4-0 victory over North Carolina Central in collegiate softball action Saturday at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks improved to 9-8 with the victory while the Eagles moved to 0-13 on the campaign.

Rowland’s matched both personal and program single-game marks for strikeouts in a game to highlight a solid effort in the circle for the Albany, N.Y., product as she allowed just four hits and one walk in seven innings of work to move her record to 5-3 on the season

Senior Casey Shue was 1-for-3 with three RBI to lead a UNCW lineup that finished with six base hits in the contest. Sophomore Erin Brown was 2-for-3 with a run scored while four players tallied one hit each.

Senior London Germ went 2-for-3 to pace the Eagles at the plate as junior Emerie Germ and freshman Dominque Wilson had the other two base hits for NCCU in the contest.

Wilson took the loss in the circle for the Eagles to move to 0-6 on the season. Wilson allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and eight walks. She struck out three.

UP NEXT: UNCW and North Carolina Central will complete their three-game series Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.

HOW IT HAPPENED: UNCW took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of three walks and a run-scoring single by freshman Nella Chamblee to build the early edge.

A bases-loaded walk to senior Casey Shue in the bottom of the second doubled the Seahawks advantage to 2-0, where it would remain until the bottom of the sixth, when Shue singled through the left side with the bases loaded to plate two runs and increase the Seahawks cushion to 4-0 and close out the scoring.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE: The two teams combined to leave 15 runners on base (UNCW 9, NCCU 6) … Rowland only threw 99 pitches in her complete game effort as she struck out eight different batters during the contest … NCCU moved a runner into scoring position in four straight innings (2nd-5th) while the Seahawks had a runner in scoring position in four of six frames, converting on three of those opportunities … The teams committed one error each in the contest.

NOTES: UNCW increased its lead in the all-time series to 13-1 as it won its third straight against NCCU … UNCW scored a run in the first inning for the ninth straight contest with its run in the first against the Eagles … The Seahawks moved to 7-3 at home this season … UNCW out-hit its opponent for the 10th time this season and moved to 8-2 when doing so … The Seahawks improved to 9-4 this season when scoring three or more runs in a contest … The shutout was the second of the season for the Seahawks and the first of the campaign for Rowland … Freshman Merritt Wilkinson extended her streak of consecutive games of reaching base to eight as the drew three walks in the contest … Shue had her second multiple RBI game of the season with her three RBI output against the Eagles … Rowland matched both her own personal mark for strikeouts in a game, set against Coastal Carolina on April 25, 2012, and that of former hurler Jess Luckett, who fanned 12 against Marist on March 19, 2005.
