|Seahawks Earn Split In Beach Bash|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team split its two games to open the UNCW Beach Bash on Friday at Boseman Field, defeating Brown, 4-3, before falling to UNCG by an 8-5 margin in the nightcap.
The Seahawks moved to 6-7 on the season with the two-game split. UNCW returns to action Saturday as it continues the UNCW Beach Bash with games against UNCG (2 p.m.) and Bucknell (4:30 p.m.)
HOW IT HAPPENED (Brown): UNCW raced out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, using a double by freshman Nella Chamblee and a bunt single by freshman Merritt Wilkinson to take the early lead.
The Seahawks added an insurance run in the bottom of the second on a single through the right side by junior Kristen Jernigan to build a 3-0 cushion.
Brown would tie the game in the top of the third, taking advantage of a two-run double by freshman Jessica Schoenewald and a sacrifice fly by senior Jen Kries to knot the score at 3-3.
UNCW regained its lead in the bottom of the third as a sacrifice fly by senior Morgan Ayers plated Chamblee and gave the Seahawks a 4-3 edge.
The Bears would put the tying run into scoring position in the sixth when sophomore Molly Ann Mecca advanced to second with two outs. Junior Casey Rowland kept Brown from plating the tying run, however, striking out the next batter she faced to end the threat.
IN THE CIRCLE (Brown): Rowland picked up the victory for the Seahawks, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks to even her season mark at 3-3. Rowland fanned a season-high eight batters in the contest.
Freshman Christina Andrews took the loss for Brown in her season debut, allowing four runs (three earned) in six innings of work. Andrews surrendered four hits and five walks in the contest while striking out two.
AT THE PLATE (Brown): Wilkinson was 2-for-2 with a RBI while Chamblee was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one run batted in to highlight a UNCW lineup that finished with four hits. Jernigan was 1-for-3 with a RBI.
Sophomore Janet Leung went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Brown. Freshman Julia Schoenewald was 1-for-3 with two RBI and senior Jen Kries went 1-for-2 with a RBI.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (Brown): The two teams combined to leave 13 runners on base (Brown 7, UNCW 6) … Brown advanced a runner into scoring position in each of its first three trips to the plate …. The two teams combined for seven stolen bases (Brown 4, UNCW 3) … The two teams combined to put their leadoff hitter abroard in just four of 13 attempts … Only two of the 11 base hits in the contest were for extra bases (two doubles).
HOW IT HAPPENED (UNCG): UNCG took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as senior Katelyn Bedwell doubled home sophomore Lindsay Thomas to give the Spartans the early advantage.
UNCW responded in the bottom half of the frame with two runs on a fielder’s choice and Spartans error to take a 2-1 lead.
UNCG regained the lead in the top of the third on a two-run double by freshman Tory Wright, only to see the Seahawks answer with three runs on an error and run-scoring singles from Chamblee and junior Jessica Rappe in the bottom half of the frame to put UNCW in front, 5-3.
Thomas brought the Spartans level in the sixth, recording a two-out double to right center that tied the game at 5-5 before UNCG would take the lead for good in the seventh, using a RBI single by sophomore Danielle Vega, a UNCW error and a fielder’s choice to build an 8-5 cushion.
Sophomore Nicole Thomas kept the Seahawks from mounting a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, retiring the side in order to pick up her first win of the season.
AT THE PLATE (UNCG): Wright went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Thomas was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for UNCG. Bedwell finished with two doubles and two RBI in four plate appearances while Vega was 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Rappe went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Gamby went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for UNCW. Chamblee was 1-for- 4 with a RBI.
IN THE CIRCLE (UNCG): Thomas got the win for UNCG as she picked up her first win of the season to move to 1-3. Thomas pitched five shutout innings in relief of starter Raeanne Hanks, surrendering just two hits while striking out four.
Freshman Peyton Jordan took the loss for UNCW to move to 3-4 on the campaign. In 6.1 innings of work, Jordan allowed eight runs on 11 hits and three walks. Sophomore Kayla Pine replaced Jordan in the seventh and recorded the final two outs.
