Seahawks Play In CAA Tournament
UNCW qualified for the Colonial Athletic Association for the second straight season and earned a bye to the semifinal round with a second-place finish. The Seahawks were picked by the league’s coaches to finish fifth. UNCW posted a record of 9-6-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the league.
Tribe Ends Seahawks Season
Nationally-ranked William & Mary netted a season-high six goals and eliminated the Seahawks with a 6-3 victory in the CAA semifinals in Philadelphia. Mateo Cardona scored twice and Jamie Dell added his fourth goal of the season for UNCW.
UNCW Lands Four on All-CAA Squads
Junior defender Jacob VanCompernolle earned first-team honors while sophomore Colin Bonner and David Sizemore were second-team selections. Freshman Kellen Foster was on the All-Rookie team. For VanCompernolle.
Three Seahawks Earn NCCSIA Honors
VanCompernolle, Bonner and Sizemore all were named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association All-State squads. VanCompernolle was a first-team honoree while Bonner and Sizemore were second-team selections.
Mateo Cardona and Colin Bonner were named to the CAA’s All-Tournament team. During the regular season, Bonner was named MVP of the Wolstein Soccer Classic and was joined by teammates Spencer Tayloe, Jacob VanCompernolle and Sean Melvin on the all-tournament team. One week later, Mark Harris was named the Defensive MVP of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic. Harris, along with Jamie Dell and Nathaniel Goodwin were all-tournament honorees.
Seahawks Crack Top-25
After sweeping the Wolstein Soccer Classic with wins over Ohio State and Cincinnati, the Seahawks cracked Soccer America’s top-25, checking in at 24th.
Bonner Leads UNCW In Scoring Again
Colin Bonner scored six goals for the second straight season to lead the Seahawks again. He also added three assists for a team-leading total of 15 points. As a freshman, he tallied 14 points on six goals and two assists.
Dell Paces UNCW IN Assists
Junior Jamie Dell lead the Seahawks with four assists for the second straight season. Dell also scored four goals and finished second on the team with 12 points. Also for the second consecutive season, dell scored the game-winner against Duke as the Seahawks topped the Blue Devils, 2-1, in Durham.
If It Were The BCS …
The Seahawks posted many favorable results in 2013 including wins over Ohio State, Cincinnati, UNC Chapel Hill and Duke. All four games were played on the road.
In the CAA
UNCW finished second in the league for the first time in the program’s history. The second-place finish was the highest since the 2008 and 2009 seasons when the Seahawks claimed the CAA regular season titles.
Twice Is Nice, Even Better In The CAA Tournament
Mateo Cardona scored twice against William & Mary in the CAA semifinals. He became the fourth Seahawk to do so and second in as many seasons. David Sizemore scored twice against James Madison in the opening round in 2012.
UNCW ended the regular season 67th in the NCAA RPI and third in the CAA. Ahead of the Seahawks were William & Mary (17th) and Delaware (31st), both earned at-large bids to the NCAA tournament. UNCW’s highest wins were on the road against UNC (30th) and Delaware.
Nine different Seahawks scored a goal this season while 10 recorded at least one point. Six players had game-winning goals with Jamie Dell, Nathaniel Goodwin and Jack Ward each collecting two game-winning markers.
Returning in 2014
The Seahawks had just two seniors on the roster this past season. Michael Parrish and Hector Martin each concluded their careers in blue and teal. UNCW potentially returns all 25 goals and 18-of-19 assists from the 2013 season.
