|VolleyHawks Fall In 5-Set Thriller To NU|

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Northeastern’s Kelly Bacon held game-high honors with 24 kills and UNCW’s Christi Laite had 22, as the Huskies edged the Seahawks, 3-2, in a thrilling Colonial Athletic Association volleyball match on Friday at Hanover Hall.
The Huskies improved to 16-9 overall and 8-3 in the league with the road win. The Seahawks, who dropped just their second home match of the season, fell to 16-9 and 5-6.
The match featured 31 ties, including 10 in the fifth and decisive set, and 13 lead changes. In the fifth set, NU held off the Seahawks, 22-20, to win the match.
In set five, the Huskies built a pair of three-point leads before the teams would trade sides with NU leading, 8-5. Leah Gagliardi came off the bench with UNCW down one and tied the set at 13-all with a kill off a feed from libero Haley Collins. UNCW faced NU game-point on six occasions, but managed to tie the set on five occasions.
In the opening set, the Seahawks rallied from a five-point deficit to drawn even at 16-all following a kill from Laite. UNCW went in front, 18-16, moments later following a pair of NU hitting errors. With the score tied at 21-all, Jamie Bredahl second kill of the set gave the Huskies a 22-21 lead they wouldn’t surrender.
UNCW then captured the next two sets to take the lead. In the second set, the Seahawks jumped out early to a 4-1 lead, but NU eventually drew even and grabbed an 11-9 lead on a kill from Hanna Gibeau. Nicole Lott would give the Seahawks the lead for good with a kill to make it 15-14. UNCW expanded the lead to five, 20-15, on a NU hitting error.
In set three, a solo block from Lott ignited a quick burst that included a pair of NU hitting errors to give UNCW a 15-14 advantage. NU again drew even at 16-all following a Bacon kill, but UNCW’s Kristin Powell restored the lead with first of her two kills in the set.
With the Seahawks looking to close out a possible victory, NU got out to a fast lead and claimed the fourth set, 25-21. Bacon led NU with five kills in the set.
Joining Bacon in double-digit kills were Bredhal with 14 and Nicole Kurz added 12. Bredahl and Ina Kamenova collected 35 and 31 assists, respectively.
Dejardins held team-high honors with 16 digs and Courtney Porter added eight block assists.
UNCW closes out its home schedule on Nov. 10, with a 1 p.m. start against visiting Hofstra. Sunday will also serve as Senior Day for the Seahawks.
