WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women’s basketball team opens the 2013-14 regular season Saturday as it faces No. 6 Notre Dame in a 1 p.m. matinee at Purcell Pavilion.

Beginning their 41st season of competition, the Seahawks will open the regular season against a ranked opponent for the second consecutive season. UNCW fell, 76-47, in its 2012-13 debut at then- No. 17 West Virginia last November.

UNCW suffered a 64-60 defeat to UNC Pembroke on Monday in its only exhibition contest of the preseason. Trailing by as many as 17 early in the second half, the Seahawks used a 25-6 run to take a two-point lead, but the Braves closed the contest by scoring 14 of the final 22 points of the game to pull the upset.

Freshman Brie Mobley led three UNCW players in double figures with 18 points and added 13 rebounds to record the double-double. Junior Kelva Atkins and freshman Amber Reeves joined Mobley in double digits with 13 points apiece while Atkins dished out a team-high six assists. Freshman D’Asia Cain pitched in nine points and led all players with five steals.

Notre Dame welcomes back four starters and nine letterwinners from its 2012-13 squad that posted a 35-2 overall mark and advanced to the Final Four for the third consecutive season. The Fighting Irish cruised to a 119-48 victory over California (Pa.) in its lone exhibition contest back on Oct. 30.

Senior guard Kayla McBride is back to lead a potent Notre Dame offense that averaged 81.2 points per game last season after averaging 15.9 points per contest during her junior campaign. Sophomore Jewel Lloyd also returns following a highly successful rookie season that saw her average 12.5 points and 5.2 rebounds on her way to earning National Freshman-of-the-Year accolades from the USBWA.

Saturday’s contest marks the first meeting between UNCW and Notre Dame. The Seahawks hold a combined 3-25 mark against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference and is facing their sixth different ACC school since the start of the 2009-10 season. The Fighting Irish are one of three ACC opponents on the schedule for UNCW this season as the Seahawks will also square off against Boston College and Wake Forest during non-conference play.

UNCW returns to Trask Coliseum Nov. 13 as it opens the home portion of its 2013-14 schedule with a 7 p.m. contest against future Colonial Athletic Association foe Elon.
