|Braves Hold Off Seahawks In Exhibition|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior forward Kierra Haney made several key baskets down the stretch to lift UNC Pembroke past UNCW, 64-60, in a preseason women’s basketball game Monday night at Trask Coliseum.
The contest was the lone tune-up on the schedule for Seahawks and second-year Head Coach Adell Harris, who travel to No. 6 Notre Dame on Friday for the 2013-14 season opener.
Haney led three Braves in double figures with 13 points and added 13 rebounds in 37 minutes. Sophomore guard Chandrica Fuller chipped in 12 points and junior guard Avae Hardy had 10 for UNCP, coached by former Seahawk men’s hoops standout John Haskins.
The Seahawks, who started four freshmen and one junior, were led by newcomer Brie Mobley ‘s monster game of 18 points and 13 boards in her unofficial collegiate debut. Junior playmaker Kelva Atkins and freshman Amber Reeves scored 13 apiece for UNCW.
Both teams struggled offensively early before heating up in the second half and battling close down the wire.
Trailing 39-27 at intermission, UNCW used a 25-6 run early in the final period to grab a 52-50 advantage with just over seven minutes left before Haney put the Braves on her back.
The Tabor City, N.C., product converted three critical buckets in the paint in the final minutes to enable UNCP to win for the first time in first time in eight exhibition tries against the Seahawks. The Braves used a commanding 57-40 advantage on the boards to overcome 19 turnovers in the contest.
Trailing 17-16 midway through the first half, UNCP regrouped and a 3-pointer by Jasmine Huntley sparked the Braves to a 23-10 run gave the Braves a 39-27 advantage at the break.
UNCP scored the first five points of the second half to expand its lead to 17 points before the Seahawks battled back. Atkins scored on a layup to start a string of 14 unanswered points as part of a 25-6 run that lasted nearly nine and a half minutes and put the Seahawks in front, 52-50, with 7:18 on the clock.
The Braves wound up shooting 35.7 percent from the floor in the game, compared to 28.4 percent for the Seahawks.
UNCP kicks off its regular season on Nov. 11 with a 7 p.m. matchup against Winthrop.
