WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior lefthander Mat Batts struck out six batters over five shutout inning and Ryan LaGrange homered to lift Blue to 5-1 victory over Gold on Sunday and a 2-0 series lead at Brooks Field.

Batts (1-0), along with relievers Ryan Foster, Alex Pernick and Jared Gesell, limited Gold to an unearned run while striking out 11 and issuing just two walks.

Junior rigthhander Jordan Ramsey (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over three innings.

For the second straight game, Luis Renvill keyed the Blue team at the top of the lineup, collecting two hits and scoring a run. Sophomore Joe Berton and freshman Jacob Sasser each added two hits as Blue outhit Gold, 10-9.

Leading 2-0 in the fifth, LaGrange turned around an offering from senior reliever Ricky Holden for a home run to left center that pushed the Blue lead to 4-0.

Gold’s lone run came across in the seventh as Gavin Stupienski singled in Andy Austin, who singled earlier in the inning.

Dillon Bass finished with two hits to lead Gold.

The series continues on Oct. 22 at 2:30 p.m.
