CARY, North Carolina – Senior Rafael Aita and junior Sam Williams of UNCW moved within one victory of advancing to the ITA National Men’s Tennis Indoor Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., after defeating doubles teams from North Carolina and South Carolina in ITA Carolina Regional action Sunday at Cary Tennis Park.

Aita and Williams, the No. 2 seeds, trimmed UNC’s Oystein Steiro and Nelson Vick, 8-6, in the quarterfinals and then downed Tsvetan Mihov and Thiago Pinheiro of USC in the semifinals by the same score.

It marks the second straight year the Seahawks have placed a team in the ITA Carolina Regional doubles final. Aita and Williams, who have lost just one match last spring and this fall combined, will face N.C. State’s Robbie Mudge and Sean Weber in Monday’s 10 a.m. championship.

“I’m very proud of Sam and Rafa for getting some great results over very strong teams,” said seventh-year Head Coach Mait DuBois. “They did a good job using their experience together and had really good communication in the tight moments of their matches.

“Sam and Rafa have been extremely consistent together and continue to get better. This is one of the toughest regionals in the country and we’ve been able to have teams in the finals two straight years. We know tomorrow’s opponents very well and look forward to a quality match.”

Mudge and Weber, the 10th seeds, earned their way to the semifinals with an 8-6 victory over No. 7 Hunter Harrington and Dominique Maden of Clemson.

In the semifinals, the Pack duo downed 11th-ranked and top-seeded Michael Redlicki and Jason Tahir of Duke, 8-4.
