CARY, North Carolina – Senior Rafael Aita and junior Sam Williams of UNCW advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw during action Saturday at the ITA Carolina Men’s Tennis Regional at the Cary Tennis Park.

The No. 2-seeded tandem won a thriller over Duke’s Cale Hammond and DJ McCall, 8-7 (2), to earn a quarterfinal berth against North Carolina’s Oystein Steiro and Nelson Vick. The match will be played at 12:30 p.m., with the winner playing again later in the day in the semifinals.

UNCW’s Zach Hublitz and Christian Van der Burgh, meanwhile, lost their bid to join AIta and Williams in the quarterfinals. Clemson’s Hunter Harrington and Dominique Maden trimmed the pair, 8-5, in another third-round match.

In singles play, Aita, from Lima, Peru, fell in the Round of 16 to Duke’s Bruno Semenzato in a three-set nailbiter, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Semifinal matches in singles and two rounds of doubles are slated for Sunday in Cary.
