WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW will have a major presence when the Carolina Region ITA Women’s Tennis Championship gets under way early Thursday  in Chapel Hill.

The Seahawks and second-year coach Evan Clark are making their second appearance of the fall season and have players competing in the qualifying singles and main doubles draws in the three-day event at North Carolina’s Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

The singles and doubles champions from the regional event earn an automatic berth to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

In the qualifying singles draw, senior Kelly Cameron (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) will battle Xue Zhang of Wake Forest at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Angie Sekely (Mississauga, Canada), Alyssa Ritchie (Franklin, Ohio) and Olga Blank (Winnipeg, Canada) are penciled in for the main singles draw, with pairings to be announced late Thursday.

In doubles, the Seahawks have four teams entered in the main draw. Sekely and Ritchie are set to play UNC’s Laura Slater and Kate Vialle at 2:30 p.m., Blank and Hollie Champion (Charlotte, N.C.) will face Barbora Lazarova and Viviana Stavreva at 2:30 p.m. and Hamilton Lovett (Raleigh, N.C.) and Alix Theodossoui (Asheville, N.C.) are scheduled to play Wake’s Brigita Bercvte and Kristina Centenari at 4:30 pm.

Cameron and Miller Hales (Wilmington, N.C.) drew an opening-round bye and will face Wake’s Samantha Asch and Luisa Fernandez on Friday.
