LEESBURG, Virginia – Seniors John Reimer and Haley Kapheim were UNCW’s top performers early Saturday when the UNCW cross country teams competed in the muggy Mason Invitational at rolling Oatlands Plantation outside of the nation’s capital.

The Seahawks, making their fourth appearance of the fall season in unseasonably warm and humid conditions, finished second out of four teams in the 8K men’s race and also second out of four entries in the 6K women’s competition.

“We were undermanned on both sides today with some injuries and sickness,” said Layne Schwier, UNCW’s assistant cross country/track and field coach, “but we got through it with decent results. We have two weeks left to get healthy and ready for the Appalachian race and a month until the CAA Championships.”

Reimer, from Monkton, Md., was the top Seahawk male finisher for the fourth consecutive race, covering the hilly layout in 27:28 for third place individually behind George Mason’s Wil McReynolds (27:19) and Michael Conway (27:23).

“John had a strong race, but fell off at the end,” said Schwier. “Freshman Colin Kern ran really strong for us today. He’s a solid runner.”

Kapheim, from Monroe, N.C., came in seventh place in the 6K women’s race with a time of 24:55. It was the longest distance of the season for the Seahawk women and the first time Kapheim has paced the squad.

“Haley stepped into the top spot for the first time in her career and she’s getting more confident. Junior Kim Black also came up big for us.”

The Seahawks travel to Boone, N.C., for the second time this season on Oct. 18 to take part in the Blue Ridge Mountain Open. UNCW opened the season in late August by competing in the Covered Bridge Open on the same course.
